Academic Courses

What level of learning is right for you?

We want you to get the most out of learning with Education for Health. To ensure that you acquire key clinical skills and knowledge, we offer different levels of learning so that you can find the right fit for your needs.

We appreciate that when you are choosing what module or workshop to undertake there are multiple factors to take into consideration, and perhaps the most important is the level of study.

When a subject is offered at more than one level, the clinical content and focus will be similar at both levels and will enable successful students to deliver sound evidence-based care.

When we say levels, here’s what we mean:

Level 5 (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 8):

Short courses taught at Level 5/Diploma Level are equivalent to the work that you would do as a second year undergraduate in a conventional three year degree course. Level 5 aims to ensure safe and effective care in the assessment and management of patients. There is generally a lot of focus on practical skills and knowledge.

Level 6 (SCQF Level 9):

Short courses taught at Level 6/Degree Level are of the same level of difficulty as those experienced in the third/final year of your undergraduate degree course. They often have similar aims as Level 5 but with the addition of developing leadership skills and the ability to manage more complex patients with a number of long-term conditions.

Courses taught at this level include fewer practical skills and an increased focus on the strategic issues involved in the delivery of care. They may therefore be more appropriate than Level 5 for those working in positions where they may be responsible for managing a team or are responsible for the development and running of services.

Level 7 (SCQF Level 11):

Level 7 modules are aimed at Health Care Professionals experienced in clinical practice and/or management. It is a highly academic course with limited practical skills , students are required to demonstrate critical thinking and evaluation skills. The modules are also supported by online materials including discussion forums and reading activities.

We also run the following:

Workshops

Workshops are used as either an introduction to an area where learners acquire essential information, or a refresher where we help learners top up their knowledge and know-how to match current practice. Both of these are taken by learners from a wide range of backgrounds.
