Enhancing Care for Patients with Interstitial Lung Disease
We are excited to announce the launch of our new Level 6 accredited short course: Enhancing Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Care in Professional Practice. Developed in collaboration with ILD specialists and accredited by the University of Hertfordshire, this course is designed to support healthcare professionals in providing earlier diagnosis, joined-up care, and better outcomes for patients with ILD.
Why ILD?
Interstitial Lung Disease is not a single condition but a group of more than 200 lung disorders, the most common being Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Patients often experience breathlessness, cough, and fatigue, and delays in diagnosis can significantly impact quality of life. With specialist services under increasing pressure, there is an urgent need for more healthcare professionals across primary, secondary, and community services to recognise ILD earlier and support patients more effectively.
What the Course Covers
This three-month, 15-credit course will:
-
Explore the pathophysiology and classification of ILD.
-
Provide training in diagnostic techniques, including high-resolution CT and histopathologic interpretation.
-
Evaluate both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
-
Strengthen skills in patient communication, particularly when discussing sensitive topics.
-
Encourage multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure joined-up care.
Flexible Learning, Real Impact
Delivered through interactive blended online learning, the course combines self-directed eLearning, pre-recorded lectures, and live webinars, supported by a dedicated ILD specialist tutor. Assessment is via a 15β20 minute recorded presentation, giving learners the flexibility to study around busy professional schedules.
Who Can Apply?
The course is open to all registered healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with long-term conditions, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals. No academic prerequisites are required.
Why Now?
As highlighted in an Early Day Motion in Parliament (January 2025), there is urgent recognition of the need to improve ILD care pathways across the UK. This course aligns with the One Voice Interstitial Lung Disease Pathway, helping to free up specialist services while ensuring patients get timely, high-quality care.
