Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan for England

The publication of the government’s Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan for England, (GOV UK 2025) has opened opportunities for health and social care professionals working in primary and secondary care to really shape the future of the NHS. The plan prioritises three fundamental shifts:

  1. Hospital to community
  2. Analogue to digital
  3. Sickness to prevention.

Our focus on long-term conditions will not only continue but expand to address these fundamental shifts. Hospital to community will require a workforce that has access to a team of experts working in the community with competence and confidence in keeping people well in their homes.  Analogue to digital will include the patient’s journey, enabling the patient to engage with the NHS App, navigating their own pathway, keeping the patient central to all decisions, and taking training out into the community where it is needed. Sickness to prevention will complement our existing courses and webinars with a strong direction of travel from sickness to prevention, such as risks, behavioural choices, social determinants of health, health inequalities and understanding the health and social care landscape.

With an emphasis on a Neighbourhood Health Service, Education for Health recognises the importance of preventative interventions and reducing risk.  Our learning materials will therefore continue to emphasise the importance of risk reduction strategies, with a focus on exploring options for preventative interventions, such as social prescribing, to augment how to identify and manage sickness and ill health.

All health and social care professionals can take this opportunity to develop and consolidate their own skill sets for a competent workforce to meet the expectations set out in this plan.

Education for Health is ready for this change and will continue to work with health and social care professionals to meet the needs of the workforce.
