Please Note: All scheduled courses (unless clearly indicated) are delivered online using an Interactive Blended Online Learning Model. This includes a blend of live webinars, workshops and Q&A sessions with clinical tutors combined with eLearning and videos; all designed to enable participants to build the knowledge and skills needed to successfully complete their course.

This course is aimed at learners who are new to working with asthma patients and would like an overview of the disease, diagnosis, and management. If you are already working with patients with asthma and would like an update, please have a look at our Asthma Online Refresher course.

Increase your knowledge and know-how.

This Essentials of Asthma programme is designed for individuals and teams who have recently begun to, or are preparing to, support patients with asthma. This may include newly qualified nursing staff, HCAs and HCSWs, social care staff, or experienced healthcare professionals who have been recently redeployed.

This course will support learners to improve their clinical practice by:

  • Discussing and reviewing best practice in asthma
  • Reviewing current guidelines around diagnosing asthma
  • Exploring a range of treatment pathways and how they contribute to a person-centred care approach
  • Reflecting on local practice

Learners can join this course at any time; there are no set start dates. Once registered, learners will have access to learning materials for six months, enabling them to learn at a pace that best suits them and to revisit topics as required.

Developed by our expert clinical tutors, the course is comprised of five short eLearning units, each of which should take no more than 60 minutes to complete. The units focus on key areas including:

  • What is Asthma
  • Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Pharmacological Management
  • Supporting Self-Management (including lifestyle interventions)

The eLearning units also include opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge to patient scenarios, and to check that they have achieved the learning outcomes by completing interactive quizzes.

To support this self-directed learning, each month, a live ‘Q & A drop-in’ is held to ensure learners have opportunities to check their understanding with a clinical tutor, ask questions, and share best practice with other learners. These optional sessions are delivered via Teams, and learners have the opportunity to attend up to six during the course of their studies.

  • Explain what asthma is and the population groups it affects
  • Recognise the symptoms of asthma
  • Explain the impact of asthma on an individual’s quality of life
  • Explain the key diagnostic tools used in asthma
  • Explain a range of pharmacological (medicine-based) and non-pharmacological (lifestyle-based) pathways used in asthma
  • Apply your learning to ‘real life’ case studies
