This module is now open only to students completing a BSc programme with Education for Health.
The Reducing Risk of Long Term Conditions Level 6 module is aimed at students who have the opportunity to influence the health of individuals, groups and communities. It will enable students to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to support individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices in relation to long term conditions and to understand the wider implications of the social determinants of health, choice architecture and large scale behaviour change. This module addresses the changing needs of the health and social care workforce and will create greater flexibility and opportunity for future students.
Successful students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the evidence base and policy initiatives informing health and well-being and the prevention of long term conditions. They will be able to identify how health and social care professionals can influence health behaviours at individual, community and national levels.

- Gaining academic credit for a named award. A number of credits is assigned to each module, which indicates the amount of learning undertaken, and the specified credit level indicates the relative depth of learning involved. Credit is a means of quantifying and recognising learning whenever and wherever it is achieved. Credit may also help you transfer to another programme either within Education for Health or at a different institution.

This is a Level 6 module, which carries 15 CATS (Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme) points.
This is a four months distance eLearning course. It has a notional study time of 150 hours which includes time to study learning materials and complete assessments.
Assignment 1 60% of overall mark
You are required to write an essay of 3000 words exploring the development and implementation of a service development plan for addressing health and well-being and the prevention of long term conditions within your area of work, or your community. Your work should include an appraisal of the evidence that underpins strategies for addressing the prevention of long term conditions, how your plan will be implemented and how this will then be monitored and evaluated.
Assignment 2 40% of overall mark
You are required to submit a short presentation which could be used to present to your colleagues and/or patients to explain the key points of value of your service development. You may be imaginative in your chosen presentation format, but you will be marked on the content and not artistic merit (1500 word equivalent).
Criteria for a pass
The pass mark for the module is 40% in each element of assessment and 40% overall. Reassessment is as per regulations in the Student Guide.
Successful completion of single modules results in the awarding of academic credits that could be used as part of a DipHE/BSc (Hons) degree programme, though this would always be at the discretion of the academic institution where you intended to undertake the programme.
Since September 2019, Education for Health no longer offers DipHE/BSc (Hons) programmes.
Successful completion of a level 6 module can also enable progression onto an MSc programme at Education for Health, as you could be eligible to bring in up to 30 credits at level 6 through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

All applicants for The Open University validated modules must be registered or working within the UK. All applicants should have sufficient competency in the English Language to successfully study at Level 5/6.
All learning materials, teaching and assessment are conducted in the English language. Students will need to apply this to an academic environment.
