The COPD Level 6 multi-professional module focuses upon the assessment and management of the individual with COPD within the context of the wider community. Importance is placed on a patient centred approach, the health needs of the individual, health promotion and self-empowerment whilst acknowledging the professional, political and social climate within which services are provided.
This module is aimed at any health care professional who wants to develop a leading role in the delivery and management of services for people with COPD and their families. This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop as autonomous practitioners in safe, effective and evidence-based practice in the field of COPD.
On completion of the course successful students will be able to suggest, initiate and vary treatment in response to individual needs. They will demonstrate sound knowledge of the literature relevant to COPD and an insight into the strategic approaches to delivery of care, to enable them to take a lead on the development of services.

- Gaining academic credit for a named award. A number of credits is assigned to each module, which indicates the amount of learning undertaken, and the specified credit level indicates the relative depth of learning involved. Credit is a means of quantifying and recognising learning whenever and wherever it is achieved. Credit may also help you transfer to another programme either within Education for Health or at a different institution.

- Professional, moral & ethical issues as they relate to COPD
- Psychosocial impact of the disease such as ethical issues & end of life
- Organisation & delivery of care services – role of the multidisciplinary team
- COPD & society: Epidemiology and aetiology; Morbidity and mortality
- COPD as a multi system disease -Physiology, anatomy and pathophysiology
- Risk factors and prevention, developing services for screening and case finding
- Holistic assessment of physical, psychological and social impact of COPD
- history taking, diagnostic tests and differential diagnosis
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management including treatment and prevention of acute exacerbation
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Strategies for supported self care
This is a Level 6 module, which carries 30 CATS (Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme) points.
This is a six month eLearning course with optional study days. It has a notional study time of 300 hours which includes time to study learning materials, attend study days where relevant, and complete assessments.
This module is delivered by blended learning, with study days to support the online course. Please note that if low numbers of students book onto this module we may cancel study days at short notice. If this is the case, students already registered will be contacted by our Finance Team and can choose to continue with the course as distance only, or be refunded.
Our study days are optional, although we advise that you attend if you possibly can, as students tell us that they learn a lot from the face to face contact with their tutor and that networking with other students is particularly useful.
The location of study days is determined by the cohort you choose to join.
Coursework 1: Problem solving assessment in divided sections total 2000 words (+/- 10%) Students are assessed by written assignment.
Students are required to submit a written assignment which is focussed on patient management
scenarios supplied to the student. The assignment will follow the problem based approach to learning that is used throughout the learning materials.
The students are required to demonstrate the ability to evaluate the situation and to demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the evidence base to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding of key concepts in making clinical recommendations.
The problem solving assignment comprises 40% of the total module mark
Coursework 2: Case Study
Students are required to submit a patient focused case study of 3,000 (+/- 10%) words based on a specific patient scenario. This must provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the management of COPD and its application in clinical practice.
The assignment component comprises 60% of the overall module mark.
Criteria for a pass
The pass mark for the module is 40% in each element of assessment and 40% overall. Reassessment is as per regulations in the Student Guide.
Successful completion of single modules results in the awarding of academic credits that could be used as part of a DipHE/BSc (Hons) degree programme, though this would always be at the discretion of the academic institution where you intended to undertake the programme.
Since September 2019, Education for Health no longer offers DipHE/BSc (Hons) programmes.
Successful completion of a level 6 module can also enable progression onto an MSc programme at Education for Health, as you could be eligible to bring in up to 30 credits at level 6 through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

All applicants for The Open University validated modules must be registered or working within the UK. All applicants should have sufficient competency in the English Language to successfully study at Level 5/6.
All learning materials, teaching and assessment are conducted in the English language. Students will need to apply this to an academic environment.
