Spirometry
Level: Diploma Module (L5)
Credits: 15
Duration: 4 months
Notional study time: 150 hours (including time to study learning materials, attend study days and complete portfolio)
This module will promote the importance of accurate, reproducible spirometry in any health care setting, it enables anyone undertaking spirometry to critically appraise their technique and understanding by both practical assessment and portfolio. Access to a spirometer and regular patient contact is essential for completion of the portfolio, which forms 50% of the marks for this module.
A basic understanding of interpretation will be assessed along with the recognition of inaccurate or unacceptable results. Awareness of current guidelines will be discussed and disseminated particularly in relation to the National Clinical Strategy for COPD which will encourage case finding and screening for the 'missing millions' who are unaware of their diagnosis.
This module is accredited by the ARTP/BTS and successful students will be entered on the ARTP spirometry register at Foundation Level (competent to perform spirometry).
