Free Diagnostic Algorithm - to guide the management of hayfever and perennial rhinitis
Which patients are appropriate for allergy testing?

An algorithm has been made widely available as a direct result of feedback from delegates of an international workshop run by Education for Health Director of Research and Education, Dr Samantha Walker at the American Thoracic Society Annual Conference. She said, “The ATS meeting is one of the largest gatherings of Pulmonary and Critical Care clinicians and researchers in the world. I was invited to speak on allergy diagnosis and the sometimes contentious issue of what makes a patient an appropriate candidate for allergy testing? One of my slides showed a simple algorithm to guide such decisions and so many colleagues and delegates have requested it that it seemed simplest to put it on our website.”

Asthma UK - Spotlight on 'Missing Out'; Report on views and experiences of young people with asthma (Webwatch series 6)

Asthma UK published their Missing Out report in May this year.  This report is one in a series of four which looks at the views and experiences of children and young people with asthma in the UK.  It found that 3 out of every 4 teachers wouldn’t know what to do if one of their pupils had an asthma attack.  It highlights the problems children with asthma face and reinforces the need for structured asthma training for school nurses, health visitors and nursery nurses, in order that they have the confidence and authority to discuss with teaching staff the importance of having asthma policies and coping with asthma sensitively in schools.

Calling for teachers to learn more about asthma so that children with asthma won’t miss out so much on what their classmates are doing, the report also calls for more school nurses, better guidelines in schools for helping kids with asthma and states that every school should have an asthma policy.  It is envisaged this training will lead on to structured sessions by these HCP’s for those who are responsible for children’s welfare – ie nursery staff, school teachers, after school clubs, etc to raise the standard of care, ensure safety, plus ensure children don’t ‘miss out’ unnecessarily.

Health professionals should log onto Asthma UK’s website and read this report to assess whether there is opportunity for them to offer guidance in their own area of practice, or direct those responsible to the excellent training resources available on their website including a wide range of educational materials for schools.

The British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology ( BSACI) continues to be a major focus for clinicians and scientists in the UK and overseas.  It supports health professionals providing high quality NHS based allergy service for those with allergic disease and other disorders of the immune system.

The BSACI have published a number of Guidelines on their website with open access to assist health professionals in knowing how to manage specific allergic problems, from rhinitis and drug allergies to anaphylaxis.

One of the most common allergic conditions seen in Primary Care is Allergic Rhinitis.  The BSACI have recently published an algorithm for managing rhinitis which takes you through all the different symptoms and treatment options.  It’s really easy to use!

From a clinical perspective, I find GP Notebook quite useful.  Notebook is exactly what it says on the tin, just type in a medical term and it will come up with what you need to know in an easy to read format - a bit like a really detailed dictionary!  This can be really useful if you are doing a piece of work or presentation in the clinical setting if you want a bit of information on your patients co-morbidities that are outside of your specialist knowledge area.

Walking the way to Health Initiative (WHI) (Webwatch series 3)

whi_logo

The Walking the way to Health Initiative (WHI) aims to encourage people, particularly those who take little exercise, to do regular short walks in their communities.

With more than 525 supported health walks on the WHI website, you can find your local ones using the fully interactive Walk Finder.

Education for Health Clinical lead for Cardiovascular Disease, Joanne Haws finds that she uses the web site a lot, “It’s useful to have somewhere to direct patients to in order for them to find ways to increase their physical activity levels, many people prefer to walk in a safe and fun environment with others.  I also recommend that Practice Nurses use the site to find health walks in their area to recommend to their patients.”

The WHI also offer some great free resources including leaflets for those thinking of walking more, newsletters, post cards and promotional posters.  We particularly like the new version of ‘Walk more feel…the difference’ which can be downloaded free directly from the site.  Clearly written and inspirational in style, there are sections on:

WALK MORE FEEL THE DIFFERENCE
  • Why walking is the perfect activity for health
  • What walking are you already doing?
  • A small change is a big step - tips to get started
  • Small steps to success - getting started, how you should feel, what to wear and how to develop a walking route
  • Building a habit - make your own walking plan
  • Picking up the pace - how to walk faster
  • Everything you do counts - thoughts on keeping going

European Lung Foundation raises awareness of lung disease for patients across Europe with new online resource (WebWatch series 3)

The European Lung Foundation has just published a fantastic resource for health professions and patients about air travel and oxygen.  The potential problems associated with lung diseases and air travel are well recognised.  Many lung patients are now able to safely enjoy the benefits of air travel if they plan their provisions in advance.

This new online resource details every airline across Europe, what they provide and who to contact. Monica Fletcher, our Chief Executive is Chairman of the International Professional Advisory Committee and a member of the Council.

Poodwaddle World Clock (WebWatch series 2)

The Poodwaddle World Clock of global health statistics manages to be morbidly fascinating and inspiring at the same time. The clock tabulates statistics on cause of death, illness and injury incidence in real time, allowing you to observe the numbers of deaths from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes, as well as incidence of asthma, TB, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The statistics are estimates calculated from annual figures provided by various sources including the World Health Organization and it is possible to view the clock by year, month, day, week or ‘now’. Education for Health staff, students and trainers were very quick to review this site:

“A really powerful way to challenge yourself and your audience to confront the realities of the morbidity and mortality associated with long-term conditions.”

“I’m here to focus on better diagnosis of risk; seeing the clock just confirms how important these skills are.”

Behind the Headlines (WebWatch series 1)

Adapted from an article by Claire Charnley, Library and Knowledge Services Manager, Shropshire County PCT.

Claire Charnley shares ‘Behind the Headlines': www.nhs.uk/News/Pages/NewsIndex.aspx

Don’t be put off by the instantly forgettable web address for this site. Once you’ve managed to get it typed in once and saved to your ‘favourites’, this site will keep you up to date with the health stories in the news headlines and give you an independent view on whether there’s any truth behind them at the same time.

Each item follows roughly the same format:

  • What the newspaper/BBC said
  • Their source for the article
  • What the source really said
  • Some indication of whether the source got it right in the first place

To take a recent example, ‘Behind the headlines’ picked up on a Daily Mail headline that claimed ‘How eating a burger and chips can make your baby a boy (and chocolate will produce a girl)’. The authors tracked down the source of the Daily Mail’s story. This turned out to be a research study on mice that found that variations in blood sugar levels were one of several factors that could influence the sex of mice’s offspring. The conclusion was that the newspaper headline was an ‘over-interpretation’ of the actual research findings!

‘Behind the headlines’ is part of the NHS Choices web site, and is a more comprehensive and consumer-oriented version of ‘Hitting the Headlines’ on the National Library for Health. At present it seems to cover a news story or two each day, but obviously cannot hope to include all health items in the headlines. You can browse the stories by broad subject headings but you can’t search (other than by searching the whole NHS Choices site). As for keeping track on the latest stories without constantly revisiting the site, you can’t receive e-mail updates, but there is a news/RSS feed available too. So, next time a patient arrives clutching a newspaper cutting and some chocolate bars/a Big Mac, why not pay ‘Behind the headlines’ a visit to find out the truth behind it all?
