New film details complex threats posed by influenzaEducation for Health today welcome a new documentary detailing the complex threats and realities posed by influenza – commonly known as flu – produced by the European Scientists Fighting Influenza (ESWI).
The documentary, ‘Influenza: Aiming at a Moving Target’, is released generally this week and aims to raise awareness of influenza and the devastating impact it can have. The film can be watched here.
Monica Fletcher, Chief Executive of Education for Health and Chair of the European Lung Foundation, today said;
“This documentary is a timely and an important step in the fight against influenza. Each winter sees numerous lives lost to influenza and the subtitle of this film says it all – we will always be aiming at a moving target when tackling this issue. Films like this are vital in helping raise awareness and keep people informed as to the threats they face and the simple measures they can take to reduce risk and ensure they and their families remain safe this winter.”
Beverley Bostock, a nurse practitioner and clinical lead at Education for Health, who has worked with ESWI, explained:
“Nurses are key players in educating patients who are in the ‘at risk’ group about the importance of having their flu jabs every year. However, statistics show that many nurses are failing to offer further protection to these patients by getting their own flu jabs done. Many nurses say they ‘meant to do it but just didn’t get round to it’.
In some countries flu jabs are now mandatory for clinicians working in direct contact with patients; refusal to have the jab done may mean that clinicians are moved to work in areas where there is no direct patient contact. While we are not being put in this position in the UK, clinicians should remember the importance of having the jab to protect themselves, their families and their patients. The virus can spread before any symptoms are evident, so prevention is the only way forward.”
