Education for Health Welcomes Asthma Initiative
27 October 2011
New Panel seeks to reduce asthma deaths
Education for Health is today pledging its support for a new initiative being led by the Royal College of Physicians. As part of the on-going struggle to manage asthma a panel is being assembled which will assess each and every asthma death in the UK over a 12 month period beginning 1st February 2012. The National Review of Asthma Deaths (NRAD) will identify the factors involved in asthma deaths which are preventable or avoidable and feed in to current best practice – helping improve care and prevent future deaths.
Education for Health’s own research demonstrates the clear links between better practice in primary care and outcomes for asthma patients. Education for Health Chief Executive Monica Fletcher said today;
“We are proud to support this important initiative. The evidence that this panel will generate, through the application of rigour, experience and systematic analysis, will be vital to all of our continuing work to tackle asthma.
With asthma deaths on the increase this initiative is a timely one and also a vital one because, as we all know, the vast majority of asthma related deaths are entirely preventable. We look forward to working with NRAD over the coming year and hearing their findings."
